      PhD position in immunology/vaccinology

A PhD position in vaccine research is available for 3 years at Institute of Pathology, University of Oslo, Rikshospitalet.

The project is a collaboration between research groups in India, USA, Denmark and Norway, in which the overall aim is to develop new and improved vaccines against tuberculosis.

Our collaborators Aeras (http://www.aeras.org/about/index.html), which is a leading foundation in development of new Tb vaccines, and St. Johns Research Institute in Bangalore (http://www.iphcr.res.in/html/contact.html) have established a field site in India for epidemiologic studies of Tb and clinical vaccine trials.

The Universities in Bergen and Oslo participate actively in the project through a $ 4 million grant from the Norwegian Research Council.

The aim of this project is to identify immunocorrelates for protection of Tb for use in vaccine studies. For this purpose a large biobank of blood samples from three different cohort studies (prospective study of 4,500 newborns, prospective household contact study of 200 households, and prospective cohort study of 7,500 adolescents) and two phase I/II clinical vaccine trials will be available.

The PhD student will work at LIIPAT, a research laboratory at the Institute of Pathology, Rikshosptialet. LIIPAT is one of five groups in the research consortium - Centre for Immune Regulation (CIR), one out of three centres of excellence at the Medical Faculty, University of Oslo.

The possibility of shorter research stays with Aeras in USA and at St. Johns Research Institute in Bangalore will be given.
